water damageWhen you have a water loss in your home, it can be hard to think about what you need to do next when all you can think of is how much damage may have been done, seen and unseen.

Here’s what to expect on how the process works.

Step 1: Contact your insurance company
The first step is calling your insurance company and notifying them that you’ve had a water loss and to make sure that your insurance will cover the damage. This will change depending on what caused the water damage: insurance will probably cover a burst pipe, but won’t cover flood damage unless you have that specific coverage.

Step 2: Contacting a disaster restoration company
After you’ve talked to your insurance company, contact the disaster restoration company. The first question you’ll hear is “How much water is in your house?”

You don’t need to have an exact amount, or the exact square footage, or exactly how big the rooms are that are affected. We’re just trying to get a general idea of what to expect. Is it one room? Two rooms? The whole house? Is it an upstairs area or downstairs? Is it in a basement? This is the kind of information that we need to know, because it’ll give us an idea of how many people and how much equipment to send out to your house.

Step 3: Inspecting the water damage
When we get to your house, we’ll go through to check and see how far the water damage extends. This involves checking drywall, cabinets, and any kind of floor coverings to see what can be saved and what will need to be tossed. Once we’ve done that, we’ll bring in our equipment to start getting you dried out.

Step 4: Drying you out
Most average, everyday water losses take 2-3 days to dry out completely. We’ll bring out our equipment that first day and stage it all. On the second day, we’ll come out and see how things are going, and may take some of the equipment offline if things are drying out properly. We don’t remove all the equipment until everything is completely dried out, so we’re not making 4-5 trips out to your house to haul things away.

While water damage can be scary when it happens, the process for taking care of it thankfully isn’t a complicated one. Hopefully this helps give you some peace of mind in that if you do have a water loss, you’ll know exactly what steps to take to get your home back to normal as fast as possible.
